Socialism is the basis of Karl Marx’s communism. It is built around the idea that everything is shared amongst people. (Partington, n.d.) Must like communism, which is again built around the same idea. The origins of this idea is unknown, as cultures using socialism date back to pre-historic eras, where tribes share food and resources equally in peace. Some even suggest that ever since there was property that was owned by one, people have been imagining a perfect civilization, (“Socialism,” 2013) an utopia being run by socialism.
The branch of socialism mostly mentioned is communism, in which it is actually socialism, but to a more sophisticated level where resources are share according to individual’s need. This is first proposed by German philosopher Karl Marx in his quote: “For each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.” Most socialists are “utopians”, generally following Marx’s vision of communism and a perfect future. A future where people are living in harmony. Without the need of currencies or conflict even, as everyone gets what they need and work for everyone else. This is an extreme form of socialism described and envisioned by Karl Marx. This is why most socialists consider themselves to be “Marxist”(Kreis, 2008) because they all work towards achieving a world with similar concept as Marx.
Socialism is represented as “Animalism” in the book. Orwell wanted to show the readers how easy it is to corrupt such simple things. When the 7 commandments were created after Old Major’s death, they were simply rules to ensure that every animal could live in harmony and create the Utopia Old Major envisioned. However, with some simple change of words, Napoleon was able to easily twists it’s meaning and completely deceive the eyes of the public. This also shows the power of propaganda at the time. This lead to Animalism originally representing Socialism Communism to a later Stalinist Communism as shown by Napoleon’s tyrant rule.
