George Orwell was born on June 25th, 1903 in Motihari, India. (“George Orwell - Biography and Works,” n.d.) He continued to live there for a short period of time before returning to England, in which after that he continued to travel around the world. During the time he acted as a wartime journalist and and a partial writer, often writing about the things he sees and his point of view of the world. Famous works during the time include: Down and out in Paris and London in 1933, A Clergyman’s Daughter in 1935, and Homage to Catalonia in 1938.
His most famous work is undeniably Animal Farm in 1945 and 1984 in 1949. Animal Farm is described as a “political fable set in a farmyard but based on Stalin’s betrayal of the Russian Revolution” by an article in BBC titled “George Orwell” (2013). George Orwell decided to write a fairy story instead of writing non-fiction because he believed that an indirect approach such as this one would make people understand it easier. Orwell wanted to show the readers how easy it is to corrupt such simple things. When the 7 commandments were created after Old Major’s death, they were simply rules to ensure that every animal could live in harmony and create the Utopia Old Major envisioned. However, with some simple change of words, Napoleon was able to easily twists it’s meaning and completely deceive the eyes of the public. This also shows the power of propaganda at the time.
