Napoleon is one of the pigs in the farm. When Old Major died, Napoleon and Snowball took the place of leadership in and revolution and eventually the entire Animal Farm. Which took advantage of the revolution, and with the help of his dogs, established his place as leader of the revolution and dictated the farm.
Originally, Napoleon was just a normal pig, but with Old Major’s final efforts to unite the animals of Animal Farm the pigs naturally rose to power, as Old Major is a boar and the pigs consider them to be of the same heritage. When Napoleon saw the opportunity, he took Bluebell and Jessie’s pups to be raised as his own, which would later become his bodyguards and the “secret police”.
When Napoleon and Snowball seems to both be taking small advantages of the farm (such as drinking the milk and keeping the apples for themselves), Napoleon is determined to get rid of Snowball and make himself the only ruler of Animal Farm. This is much like the relationship between Stalin and Trotsky. Stalin supported keeping the revolution within one country, much like Napoleon wanting the “educate” the animals of Animal Farm and teaching them to use firearms. When Napoleon sees Snowball winning over the animals, Napoleon uses his dogs to chase him away. This part is however different from the USSR because it was Stalin who as getting the likes of the people and he used his powers to evict Trotsky from the USSR. This however still shows Stalin’s fear towards people that might overthrow him and how much he wants to establish his place on the top of the Soviet Union.
One of the reasons why George Orwell decided to represent Stalin as a pig is because pigs usually represent sloth and evil, much like how Stalin seems to be the leader of the USSR but never actually works or does anything himself. I think Orwell did a good job at expressing Stalin with the pigs.
